Iowa Jazz Composers Orchestra to perform at the Coralville Center for the Performing Arts
CORALVILLE, Iowa – Led by University of Northern Iowa Professor Mike Conrad, the Iowa Jazz Composers Orchestra will be performing at the Coralville Center for the Performing Arts in Coralville, IA on Sunday, January 21st at 2pm. This concert will feature an opening set by the Iowa City High School Jazz Ensemble, and some brand new music for the IJCO, including a commissioned piece that 2023 Sammy Nestico Award-winner Conrad wrote for the United States Air Force Band "Airmen of Note."
The Iowa Jazz Composers Orchestra is Iowa’s premiere large jazz ensemble, dedicated to playing original music by Iowa writers. Band members include top-notch public school music educators, UNI professors, and professional jazz musicians from all over Iowa, showcasing the very best jazz talent that the state has to offer. This 17-piece all-star band has performed in Iowa City (James Theater), Cedar Rapids (CSPS Hall, Jazz Under the Stars), Des Moines (Hoyt Sherman Place, Noce), Cedar Falls (Oster Regent Theatre, River Place Plaza), and Davenport (Redstone Room, Music on the River). This will be the group’s first time performing in Coralville.
Aware of our reputation as a “flyover” state, the IJCO wants to show people in Iowa and beyond that they don’t need to look to New York City or Chicago for beautiful, high-quality, creative music -- there are amazing artists and musicians doing incredible things right here. Join us for an evening of original music by the likes of Bob Washut, Chris Merz, Mike Conrad, and John Rapson, featuring a world-class band.
